What is the CogAT test, and what does it measure?
CogAT is a group-administered assessment of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning. Schools use it with other evidence to understand how a student approaches unfamiliar problems—not to measure mastery of one school subject. Learn what CogAT measures.
Is CogAT an IQ test?
Not exactly. CogAT measures reasoning in three domains, but it is not a substitute for an individually administered intelligence evaluation. Its results are most useful when considered with achievement, classroom, and other evidence. Compare CogAT and IQ testing.
What are the three CogAT batteries?
The three batteries are Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. In CogAT Complete, each battery has three subtests, for nine subtests total. See every CogAT question type.
Which CogAT level matches my child's grade?
The usual progression starts with Level 5/6 in kindergarten, then Levels 7–12 for Grades 1–6. Combined levels serve later grades, but the school may select a different level based on timing and need. View the printable level chart.
How should a student prepare for CogAT?
Use original examples to learn the directions and reasoning patterns—not to memorize secure test items. Favor short, low-pressure sessions, discuss why answers work, and protect sleep and routine before test day. Choose practice by grade.
Can students take a free CogAT practice test?
Yes. CogAT.org provides original practice items for familiarization. They are not secure test questions, and a practice result is not an official CogAT score. Start the free CogAT practice test.
How are CogAT scores reported?
Reports may include raw scores, Standard Age Scores (SAS), percentile ranks, stanines, battery and composite scores, and an Ability Profile. Each describes something different. Use the CogAT score guide.
What is the difference between SAS, percentile rank, and stanine?
SAS is an age-normed standard score with an average of 100; percentile rank shows the percentage of the comparison group scoring at or below the result; stanine places the result in one of nine broad bands. Compare CogAT score types.
What CogAT score qualifies a student as gifted?
There is no universal national cutoff. Districts set their own criteria and may combine CogAT with achievement, grades, teacher input, or other evidence. Understand CogAT gifted cutoffs.
What does a CogAT Ability Profile mean?
The Ability Profile combines an overall stanine-based level with a letter showing whether battery scores are even or uneven. A, B, C, and E patterns describe different degrees of variation. Decode a CogAT profile.
